You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
It’s that time of year again where the days grow shorter, the wind starts picking up, and the temperatures start dropping (and if you’re one of my neighbors, it also means swapping your Halloween decorations for Christmas lights. But I digress). The holiday season is just around the corner, and so are opportunities to ruin your holiday cheer. With a little caution, you can save yourself from a big headache. Below are my top tips on how to stay safe this holiday season:
Virtual credit cards – If you’re tech-savvy enough to be reading this blog, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with online shopping. Many credit cards come with an option to generate a short-term virtual credit card number associated with your main account. While we would all like to believe our information is safe with big name companies,...
The most important weapon in your arsenal will be your ability to adapt.

I LOVE to research things. Unfortunately, that constant drive to learn also results in a (perhaps not so) healthy level of paranoia. To that end, I take every precaution a security advisor can with their data while still functioning normally in an advanced society, much less a technical career. Because I also advise those in my life to do the same; I am the “go to guy” whenever anything technical happens to them.
Recently, one of these situations occurred. Someone near to me (Let’s call him Alfred) was following a common piece of guidance, “Frequently check online account statuses,” a few hours before taking his family on a multi-state road trip. It could be my driver’s license, my debit card and my computer all at once. This comes, however, at a daunting cost for the... read more >
Protecting Credit Card Data and Meeting PCI DSS Requirements
Have you ever walked into a grocery store and found the milk on a shelf next to the mustard? Or while walking the seemingly endless aisles of a supermarket and seen the ice cream next to ice scrapers?
Unless some mischievous kids were having fun, the answer is “of course not.” There's an almost perfect order to the retail store layout, even if it is a bit overwhelming.
Does this look like segmentation?
Not only are the dairy products kept in a somewhat contained area, they are also refrigerated and protected. Do you think it's a coincidence that high-value items like jewelry and electronics are in central locations with lots of lights and minimal visual barriers?
Of course not.
This is done by design. These valuable items are prone to theft so they require an elevated level of visibility and additional protection to safeguard them. Many items are locked away and can only be accessed by... read more >
Credit Card Safety - NOT Just For The Holidays
We are all shopping this holiday season, right? We flooded stores on Black Friday, and today is Cyber Monday, one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. We really give those credit cards a workout during the holidays.
But with all the news in the past year about data breaches and credit card compromises, are you worried about your credit cards? I am. As a matter of fact, four of my credit cards have been replaced in the past three months.
There are limited things you can do to stop your credit card from being stolen in a big breach. If you use your card, it is at risk. 60 Minutes recently had a feature story that talked about retailer breaches.
But, if you... read more >
